The two-year programme, launched in 2014, gave students the flexibility to choose core and elective subjects from different streams which makes this an interdisciplinary course. There are core courses on Literature, History, Archaeology etc that students can choose while doing the MA in Culture and Society,” says Arka Chattopadhyay, assistant professor, Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Gandhinagar.
“The MA in Culture and Society is an extension of the liberal arts ethos of the institution. This is the only inter-disciplinary cultural studies MA programme offered by any IIT. It shows how IITs are fast becoming important centres in the humanities education in India,” explains Chattopadhyay.
Candidates with any bachelor's degree such as BA, BSc, BTech, BE, BCom etc are eligible to apply for the programme. Admissions are based on performance in written test (MCQ pattern) followed by an interview, conducted at Gandhinagar campus. “The programme is open to all but most applications are received from humanities candidates,” says Chattopadhyay. The campus has 40 seats, for which close to 300-400 candidates apply for admissions. Candidates shortlisted for the MA programme in Culture and Society are offered a monthly stipend of Rs5000.
