Masters in Design in IIT

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has set up a new department of design (DOD) which has introduced two new postgraduate programmes – Masters in Design (industrial design) and Masters in Innovation Management (MIM) – that will start from the 2021-22 academic year.

The Department of Design will facilitate interdisciplinary design-based education, research, and entrepreneurial initiatives.

The Department would also be an archival repository of design innovation practices and become a resource centre for information and knowledge in the industrial design and innovation management domains. It aims to strengthen academia-industry ties to address societal problems through collaborative efforts that would lead to the development of viable products.

“In this day and age, innovation led design drives solutions to problems faced by industries and societies across the globe. The early trends show that both the programmes have been warmly received by students from across the country,” says Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, director, IIT-Roorkee.

Masters in Design (industrial design) would help students gain exposure to the fundamentals of design and prototyping, design thinking, product-human interface, etc, says the institute. Career prospects for graduating students will include those in the design industry, design studios and/or setting up an independent design practice.

Masters in Innovation Management (MIM) programme will prepare students for initiating, managing, and successfully executing projects, a key skill that is in demand globally. Career prospects for graduates in this field are in innovation research, brand management, research and development, and entrepreneurship.
