The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has established a new department of design (DOD), which will offer two new postgraduate programmes beginning in the 2021-22 academic year: Masters in Design (industrial design) and Interdisciplinary design-based education, research, and entrepreneurial ventures will be facilitated through the Department of Design.
The Department would also serve as an archive for design innovation techniques and a hub for information and knowledge in the fields of industrial design and innovation management. Its goal is to establish academic-industry ties in order to address societal issues through collaborative efforts that result in viable products.
“In this day and age, innovation led design drives solutions to problems faced by industries and societies across the globe. The early trends show that both the programmes have been warmly received by students from across the country,” says Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, director, IIT-Roorkee.
Masters in Design (industrial design) would help students gain exposure to the fundamentals of design and prototyping, design thinking, product-human interface, etc, says the institute. Career prospects for graduating students will include those in the design industry, design studios and/or setting up an independent design practice.
Masters in Innovation Management (MIM) programme will prepare students for initiating, managing, and successfully executing projects, a key skill that is in demand globally. Career prospects for graduates in this field are in innovation research, brand management, research and development, and entrepreneurship.
