According to his book agent, Andrew Wylie, author Salman Rushdie, who was stabbed numerous times at an event in New York on Friday, will probably lose one eye. Wylie claims that after many hours of operation, Rushdie was placed on a ventilator because the nerves in his arms had been cut. Rushdie's liver had been stabbed, he said, causing damage.
Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old New Jersey resident, was named as the culprit who stabbed Rushdie by the New York Police. Soon after attacking the author, he was taken into custody by the police.
Salman Rushdie was stabbed on Friday as he was about to deliver a lecture in western New York's Chautauqua institute. Rushdie, 75, was stabbed as he was being introduced on stage.
The author was taken by helicopter to a hospital where he underwent surgery to treat his wounds.
Salman Rushdie rose to prominence with his Booker Prize-winning 1981 novel 'Midnight’s Children', but his name became known around the world after 'The Satanic Verses'. The book has been banned in Iran since 1988, as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous.
