After undergoing surgery as a result of a knife attack at a literary event in New York, US, author Salman Rushdie is currently on a ventilator and may lose an eye. Hadi Matar, a 24 year old New Jersey resident, has been named as the attacker.
The following are five facts about Salman Rushdie's assailant:
According to a preliminary analysis of Matar's social media, he supports "Shia radicalism" and the goals of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC).
Despite the fact that Matar and the IRGC have no direct connections, investigators apparently discovered pictures of the murdered 2020 Iranian commander Qassem Solemani in Matar's cell phone messaging app.
Hadi Matar reportedly jumped up on the stage as Rushdie was about to give a speech at the Chautauqua Institution near the New York city, which holds arts programmes. Henry Reese, the interviewer, also suffered a head injury in the attack.
Police believe Matar was "working alone". The authorities, however, are in the "process of obtaining search warrants for various items. There was a backpack located at the scene. There was also electronic devices".
Hadi Matar is from Fairview, New Jersey. Authorities are still looking into Matar's nationality and his criminal records, if any.
