Atishi, the head of the Aam Aadmi Party, will become the Chief Minister of Delhi at 4:30 p.m. today. Atishi and five other AAP MLAs will take an oath of office as ministers during the swearing-in ceremony, which is scheduled to happen at the Lt Governor's mansion, Raj Bhavan.
After Sheila Dixit of the Congress and Sushma Swaraj of the BJP, Atishi will be the third female chief minister of Delhi. The leader of the AAP will also be Delhi's youngest chief minister.
Atishi was named Chief Minister of Delhi by the President, and on the day of her inauguration, she also accepted Arvind Kejriwal's resignation. The appointment of five ministers was also approved by the president.
After Arvind Kejriwal, the party's convenor, resigned due to the Supreme Court granting him bail in the liquor policy case that resulted in the imprisonment of party MP Sanjay Singh and his former deputy, Manish Sisodia, for several months, Atishi will assume the top position.
After serving six months in jail, Mr. Kejriwal declared as he was leaving, "I received justice from the legal courts; now I will receive justice from the people's court." I want to know if Kejriwal is guilty or innocent among the people of Delhi. Please vote for me if I did a good job."
Mr Kejriwal was detained twice in June by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate on allegations of money laundering and corruption related to the liquor policy scam.
After providing relief in the latter case in July, the Supreme Court declared last week that his "prolonged incarceration amounts to unjust deprivation of liberty" while imposing bail in the former case.
One of the bail requirements was that Mr. Kejriwal could not sign official documents or orders without the Lieutenant Governor's approval, as the AAP has had multiple violent run-ins with the governor.
