Delhi Chief Minister Atishi announced on Sunday night that physical classes in all schools will remain suspended due to the alarming levels of pollution gripping the city for the fifth consecutive day. However, students in Classes 10 and 12 will be exempted from this suspension, likely due to their upcoming board examinations.
The announcement came as the city’s air quality deteriorated further, prompting urgent action. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked stricter pollution control measures under Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). These measures, which represent the highest level of intervention, will take effect starting Monday at 8 a.m.
Under GRAP Stage 4, restrictions aim to curb sources of pollution, including halting construction activities, regulating vehicular emissions, and enforcing industrial compliance. The escalating air pollution levels in Delhi-NCR have raised significant concerns about public health and safety, especially for children.
The suspension of physical classes reflects the city’s commitment to protecting its residents, particularly students, from the adverse effects of toxic air. Authorities have urged residents to minimize outdoor activities and adopt safety measures, such as using masks and air purifiers, to cope with the hazardous air quality.
