For many Indian students, the years after school are closely associated with preparing for competitive examinations such as JEE and NEET. But 17-year-old Pranav Ilango from Erode, Tamil Nadu, chose to take a different route — one that has now led him to an Ivy League classroom with a ₹3.55 crore scholarship.

Pranav is set to begin his undergraduate studies at Brown University later this month. He plans to study Applied Mathematics and Public Health, with his scholarship covering the full cost of his four-year education.

A Different Academic Road

Pranav's journey began to take a different direction when a teacher recognised his academic potential and encouraged him to move to the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum.

The decision was unusual for his family, where international education was not previously part of their academic experience. But the change gave Pranav an opportunity to explore learning beyond the conventional examination-focused approach.

A major turning point came when he learned about another student from Erode who had received a scholarship to study in the United States. Inspired by that story, Pranav began researching overseas universities and gradually started building a profile aimed at leading institutions abroad.

Four Years of More Than Academics

Instead of focusing solely on entrance-exam preparation, Pranav spent the next several years developing a broader range of interests and experiences.

Alongside maintaining strong academic performance, he took on leadership responsibilities, competed in chess and participated in community initiatives.

One of his notable efforts involved leading cancer-awareness campaigns that reportedly reached tens of thousands of people across several cities. He also participated in educational programmes and mentorship initiatives that helped him understand the US university admissions process.

These experiences helped demonstrate interests and abilities beyond classroom performance — an important part of his application to American universities.

The Scholarship That Changed Everything

Pranav's efforts eventually culminated in an offer from Brown University, accompanied by a full scholarship valued at approximately ₹3.55 crore.

The financial support covers the cost of his four-year undergraduate education, making it possible for him to attend the prestigious university without the enormous financial burden that international education can otherwise place on a family.

A Different Definition of Success

Pranav's story does not suggest that JEE or NEET preparation is the wrong choice. Instead, it highlights that academic success can take different forms.
