IIT Roorkee launches Centre for Drone Research


The centre will focus on research in several domains of drone technology including drone development, applications and anti-drone technology

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has launched a new centre for drone research. The centre will function from the institute’s department of electronics and telecommunications. The centre will focus on research in several domains of drone technology including drone development, applications and anti-drone technology. The initiative has secured a seed funding of Rs 1.4 crore from alumni of the 1994 batch on the occasion of their silver jubilee reunion. As many as 198 former students of the 1994 batch donated the money to establish the drone centre. According to experts, India will become a drone hub by 2030 and drones and anti-drones will define the core combat capabilities of tomorrow. The drone market is expected to be worth 128 billion and has around 38 different areas of application. The new centre will train researchers in the field of drone technology to utilise the opportunities in the field along with healthcare and social impact domains.
