Some student organisations staged separate rallies on Wednesday over the higher education department's decision to raise undergraduate seats in all of Cluster University Jammu's constituent colleges. Protesters from the National Student Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) went to the streets in several locations before peacefully dispersing.
According to officials, a group of protesting students left Gandhi Nagar's Government College for Women and attempted to block the main road in support of their demand for increased intake capacity and infrastructural improvements at all constituent institutions.
They said, however, that a large posse of cops rushed to enforce law and order persuaded the demonstrators and drove them back inside the college grounds.
