JNU issues fresh directions to prevent spread of Covid-19 on campus

In the wake of an increase in Covid-19 incidents, the Jawaharlal Nehru University released new instructions for students and staff on Sunday, including mandatory thermal screening and the wearing of a face mask in hostels and within all campus buildings. On Saturday, Delhi reported 3,567 Covid-19 cases, with the positive rate rising to 4.48 percent from 4.11 percent the day before, and 10 more people infected.

According to official data, the national capital saw a rise in cases, with 3,594 cases registered on Friday, the highest daily count this year, 2,790 cases on Thursday, 1,819 cases on Wednesday, and 992 cases on Tuesday. In a circular, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) stated that face masks would be required for all students and employees on campus, including those in hostels, libraries, and admissions offices.

“If students and employees are found wearing the mask, they will not be permitted in hostels, administrative buildings, school buildings, and the Dr B R Ambedkar Central Library, as well as other buildings and public spaces, including shopping complexes and walking on the road,” it said.

Faculty and staff at JNU were told to wear face masks at all times “to set an example” in terms of following COVID-19 protocols. Face masks have also been mandated for shopkeepers and canteen employees.

According to the circular, “any breach will result in the closure of the shop or canteen for two days at first, and subsequent violations will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the rules and norms of the organisation.” Hand sanitisation and thermal screening have been made mandatory at all key points, including at schools, special centres, hostels, the administration building and the central library, it said.
