The Union Cabinet has approved the ambitious One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) program, a major step towards empowering young people and bolstering Indian universities. By encouraging multidisciplinary research and filling in the gaps in academic resources, this innovative program seeks to establish India as a worldwide knowledge powerhouse.
Key Highlights of the ONOS Scheme
Universal Access Across Institutions The ONOS initiative will provide seamless access to over 13,000 prestigious journals from 30 international publishers on a unified platform. All central and state-run higher education institutions, along with research and development organizations under the central government, will benefit from this comprehensive access, covering approximately 6,300 institutions nationwide.
Streamlined National Subscription Model Coordinated by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET), an autonomous UGC body, the scheme centralizes subscription payments for major publishers like Elsevier ScienceDirect, Springer Nature, and Wiley Blackwell Publishing. Institutions can allocate funds for journals outside the ONOS coverage, ensuring flexibility.
Efficient Financial Planning With a budget of ₹6,000 crore allocated for three years (until 2027), ONOS ensures sustainability and cost-effectiveness. By replacing fragmented subscription systems, the scheme levels the playing field for institutions unable to afford high-quality resources.
Fostering Research Excellence Launching on January 1, 2025, ONOS aims to democratize access to academic resources, enabling students and researchers from underfunded colleges to access cutting-edge knowledge.
Empowering Academia and Youth
ONOS marks a transformative step in enhancing India’s academic infrastructure:
Promotes Excellence:Â Quality resources drive innovation and high-caliber research across institutions.
Encourages Collaboration:Â A shared platform breaks disciplinary silos, fostering interdisciplinary research.
Supports Youth Empowerment:Â Democratized knowledge access equips students and researchers to excel globally.
A Vision for Inclusive Education
The ONOS scheme reflects the government’s commitment to equitable education and research opportunities. By bridging systemic gaps and investing in research infrastructure, it strengthens India’s standing as a global leader in education and innovation.
This initiative underscores the ethos of collective growth, ensuring that financial barriers no longer hinder academic aspirations. With ONOS, India’s academia is set for a new era of collaboration and excellence.
