New Delhi, 9th October 2024: Renowned actor and politician Khushbu Sundar made a significant visit to the Andhra Pradesh Handloom Exhibition at Dilli Haat in the national capital, where she was warmly welcomed by Commissioner Rekha Rani. The exhibition, showcasing the rich tradition of Andhra Pradesh weavers, featured an array of stunning handloom products, including the famous Dharmavaram and Gadwal saris, along with other intricately woven fabrics.
Rekha Rani personally guided Khushbu Sundar through the exhibition, explaining the fine details and the painstaking efforts that go into creating these handloom masterpieces. As Sundar moved through the stalls, she expressed her admiration for the craftsmanship, taking time to engage with the weavers who have dedicated their lives to preserving this art form.
Khushbu Sundar was particularly moved by the stories behind each piece, noting the rich heritage carried by the weavers through their skillful hands. "It's not just fabric; it's a piece of history woven into every thread," she remarked while appreciating the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of the handloom saris.
The handloom sector of Andhra Pradesh, known for its variety of products, was well-represented at the exhibition, bringing traditional Dharmavaram saris, known for their rich gold borders, and Gadwal saris, which blend cotton and silk, to the spotlight. Sundar's interaction with the weavers highlighted the personal touch and labor-intensive process behind these works of art.
Commissioner Rekha Rani shared insights on how the Andhra Pradesh government is committed to supporting its weavers through such exhibitions, bringing their work to a wider audience in urban centers like Delhi.
In addition to Sundar's visit, Professor Gaurav Mandal, a national award-winning expert in handloom textiles, also attended the event. Prof. Mandal, known for his contributions to the revival of Indian handlooms, held discussions with the weavers, sharing insights and offering encouragement.
The Andhra Pradesh Handloom Exhibition, currently open to the public at Dilli Haat, offers a unique opportunity to explore the region's handloom products, including Dharmavaram and Gadwal saris, which blend intricate design and rich heritage. Sundar and Mandal’s involvement added a significant spotlight to the ongoing event, emphasizing the cultural importance of handloom textiles and the need to support the artisans behind them.
The Andhra Pradesh Handloom Exhibition was officially inaugurated at Dilli Haat on 7th October by Smt. K. Sunitha, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government, Handlooms & Textiles, Andhra Pradesh and Dr. M. Beena, IAS, Development Commissioner, Handlooms, Government of India; and Smt. G. Rekha Rani, IAS, Commissioner of Handlooms & Textiles, Andhra Pradesh. graced the inaugural ceremony in the national capital.
A total of 26 stalls have been set up at the exhibition, featuring 20 handloom and 6 handicraft stalls. Visitors can explore an array of handloom products, including Gadwal sarees, Dharmavaram silk sarees, Kalamkari products, Polavaram, Uppada Jamdhani, Angara, Kuppadam, Venkatagiri, Madanapalli, Bobbili sarees, and Pulagutha. Additionally, there are Muramunda cotton shirtings, Ponduru dhoties, and home furnishings such as Eluru carpets, Boddam bed sheets & towels, duppattas, wall hangings, Yemigganuru bedsheets, and towels. Handicraft stalls showcase distinctive products such as terracotta, wooden carvings, leather puppetry, Etikoppaka toys, Kalamkari block printing, and crochet lace.
