Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stated that Assam will soon implement a Uniform Civil Code. He asserted that while the BJP government has curbed infiltration, stronger action is needed, emphasizing that all illegal immigrants must be identified and deported. He made these remarks while appealing for a third consecutive term for the party in the state.
Speaking at an election rally in Nalbari, a BJP stronghold, Shah urged voters to support the party decisively in the upcoming polls. He said a renewed mandate would enable the government to take firm action against infiltrators and ensure their removal from the state.
Shah accused the Indian National Congress of engaging in vote-bank politics that, according to him, altered Assam’s demographic composition. He alleged that several districts had seen demographic shifts due to such policies. He also criticised Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Gaurav Gogoi, for opposing measures aimed at removing alleged illegal immigrants from electoral rolls, questioning their stance on the issue.
He further claimed that the Congress continues to resist the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which he said is being undertaken by the Election Commission of India to identify and remove ineligible voters. Shah maintained that the BJP government would ensure such names are deleted and that illegal immigrants are deported.
Highlighting the state government’s actions, Shah said the administration led by Himanta Biswa Sarma has cleared around 1.25 lakh acres of land from alleged encroachments. He added that further steps would be taken to ensure no such land remains occupied.
At another rally in Dhekiajuli, Shah reiterated his criticism of the Congress and credited the BJP with restoring peace in Assam through multiple accords that led thousands of youths to give up arms. He contrasted development under the two parties, stating that the state received significantly higher central funding during the tenure of Narendra Modi compared to the previous Congress-led government.
He also pointed to ongoing development initiatives, including plans for a semiconductor plant and the expansion of medical and engineering colleges across districts, as evidence of the government’s focus on growth and infrastructure in Assam.
