Cannes 2026: Mouni Roy unveils Bombay Stories in Patola ensemble embroidered over 300 hours

The glamour of the Cannes Film Festival 2026 witnessed a striking blend of fashion, culture and conversation as Indian celebrities made memorable appearances on the global red carpet. From traditional handwoven textiles to symbolic cultural statements, Indian stars brought heritage and individuality into the spotlight.

Actor Mouni Roy turned heads as she unveiled the first look and teaser of her upcoming film Bombay Stories at Cannes. Dressed in a stunning electric blue Patola-inspired ensemble by The House of Patola, the actor celebrated the rich weaving traditions of Gujarat. Sharing the moment on Instagram, she revealed that the intricately embroidered outfit, designed by Puja Shah, required nearly 300 hours of craftsmanship by skilled artisans.

The ensemble featured a square neckline adorned with vibrant geometric motifs in red and yellow, reflecting the timeless beauty of Patola textiles. Originating in Gujarat, Patola weaving is known for its painstaking process, vivid colours and royal legacy, once associated with aristocracy and affluence.

Meanwhile, Aditi Rao Hydari embraced understated elegance in a sophisticated buttercream halter-neck gown. Styled by Sanam Ratansi, the actor completed her look with soft dewy makeup, side-swept waves and champagne-gold stilettos, exuding effortless glamour on the Cannes sidelines.

Another notable appearance came from Haryanvi actor and Miss Haryana 2023 Ruchi Gujjar, whose red carpet look became one of the most discussed fashion moments online. Dressed in a vibrant pink ghagra choli with a traditional ghunghat, Gujjar described her appearance as a statement supporting the “Freedom From Ghunghat” movement. In her social media post, she wrote that the ghunghat represented respect and pride, but should never symbolize silence.

Her appearance sparked divided reactions across social media. While some users praised the powerful cultural symbolism and applauded her for bringing regional traditions to an international platform, others questioned the contradiction between advocating freedom from the ghunghat while wearing it prominently at Cannes.

With Indian celebrities increasingly using international platforms to showcase regional craftsmanship and cultural narratives, Cannes 2026 once again highlighted the growing global influence of Indian fashion and storytelling.
