From Youngest IIT Aspirant to AI Research Engineer in the US: Satyam Kumar’s Inspiring Journey

Satyam Kumar’s journey from a farming family in Bihar to becoming a machine learning systems research engineer in the United States is a remarkable story of determination, academic excellence and perseverance.

Born on July 20, 1999, in Bakhorapur village of Bhojpur district, Bihar, Satyam grew up in an agrarian family. From an early age, he balanced his studies with responsibilities at home while developing a strong interest in academics.

Recognising his potential, his parents sent him to Kota, Rajasthan, for IIT-JEE preparation. At just 12, Satyam cleared the examination, earning recognition as one of the youngest students to qualify for the prestigious engineering entrance test. He appeared for the examination again at the age of 13 and secured an impressive All India Rank of 670.

In 2013, Satyam joined IIT Kanpur to pursue electrical engineering. During his time at the institute, he developed a keen interest in robotics and machine learning. He also demonstrated his technical abilities by finishing as runner-up at Techkriti 2014 in a competition focused on amphibious robotics technology capable of operating on both land and water.

His academic achievements continued to open new opportunities. In 2016, he received the Excellence Charpak Summer Training Scholarship to undertake training in France. The following year, he was awarded a teaching assistant fellowship by the Government of India.

After completing his BTech and MTech at IIT Kanpur, Satyam moved to the United States in 2019 to pursue a PhD in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Texas.

He completed his PhD thesis in 2024 and subsequently joined Apple’s Siri Speech team in Switzerland as a machine learning intern. He later began his professional career as a machine learning systems research engineer at Texas Instruments.

Today, Satyam works on advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. His journey from a middle-class farming family in Bihar to the cutting edge of AI research has become an inspiring example of how determination, parental support and sustained effort can help overcome seemingly formidable challenges.

Satyam’s story continues to inspire students, particularly those from rural and farming backgrounds, to pursue ambitious academic and professional goals.
