Career as a Forest Ranger


A forest ranger's calling motives include a respect for the environment, a desire to conserve natural resources and heritage, and a vision of sustainable forest growth. Supervisory, executive, and security responsibilities are all part of the forest ranger's job description. His function normally entails tasks such as:

  • timber extraction

  • camp organisation

  • taking surveys

  • road and tramline aligned construction

  • regeneration survey

  • plantation management

  • nursery management

  • conversion of timber in mills

  • timber disposal

  • timber export

  • depotorganisationdepot organisation

  • marking

  • enumeration

Eligibility Criteria

18 – 30 years of age (limit varies among states); a degree in agri/natural sciences, mathematics, statistics, or mechanical/civil/chemical engineering


Forest Ranger Selection Criteria

(a) Test Pattern as conducted by The State Public Service Commission:-

Written Exam: GK, English, and Math Preliminary Exam Main Exam: Two optional subjects, which could differ from state to state.

The following is the standard of exams for the Preliminary Examination in General Knowledge, General English, and Mathematics.


(ii) Physical Fitness

Candidates who pass the written examination (Main Examination) must meet the following physical standards and undergo the following tests as prescribed by the Orissa Forest Service, Class-II (Recruitment and Conditions of Service) Rules, 1984, as amended from time to time.


(a) Minimum standards for height and chest girth for a candidate shall be as under:-

(b) Candidates must pass a physical test: 25 km walk for males and 16 km walk for females in 4 hours.

Job Prospects

This is a demanding work that necessitates both physical health and mental acuity. The incumbent begins as a forest ranger and progresses through the ranks to become an assistant forest conservator.
