New Delhi: Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s nominee for the Vice President’s post, has been elected to succeed Jagdeep Dhankhar, securing a close victory over Opposition candidate and retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy.
A seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, Mr Radhakrishnan has twice been elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore and previously served as the state party chief. He held the post of Governor of Jharkhand between February 2023 and July 2024, and also had additional charge of Telangana and Puducherry.
Known for his long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP’s predecessor, Jan Sangh, he is regarded as one of the party’s tallest leaders in Tamil Nadu. His candidacy was seen as a strategic choice to strengthen the BJP’s presence in southern states ahead of crucial elections.
Unlike his predecessor Jagdeep Dhankhar, who often clashed with the Opposition, Mr Radhakrishnan is seen as a more affable and conciliatory leader. His election is viewed as a signal that the Rajya Sabha needs balance rather than confrontation.
