India is preparing to enter a new phase in aviation, expanding operations from land to water with the launch of its first commercial seaplane service. SkyHop Aviation, the country’s first seaplane operator, has received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), clearing the way for commercial operations.
This approval marks a significant milestone for India’s aviation sector. Earlier this month, the company successfully conducted water take-offs and landings in Rishikesh, demonstrating operational readiness.
Focus on Lakshadweep
In the initial phase, SkyHop Aviation will begin services in Lakshadweep. The seaplane network will connect five islands within the archipelago and also link them to the Indian mainland. Operations will commence with a 19-seater aircraft.
The move is particularly important for Lakshadweep, where airport infrastructure is limited and inter-island travel can often be slow and complex. Seaplanes are expected to significantly reduce travel time and make island connectivity faster and more efficient.
Boost for Remote Connectivity and Tourism
Beyond Lakshadweep, the service is expected to improve connectivity to remote islands, hilly terrains, and waterfront destinations where building traditional airports is challenging. Journeys that currently take hours or even days by road or boat could be shortened considerably.
The initiative is also likely to provide a major boost to tourism, especially in scenic regions known for their beaches, lakes, and riversides. Improved accessibility could attract more visitors and support local economies.
What is a Seaplane?
A seaplane is a type of aircraft designed to take off and land on water, making it ideal for regions with limited runway infrastructure.
