Inspired by Lord Krishna’s Divine Weapon, Modi Announces Sudarshan Chakra Mission

ree

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced the launch of the Sudarshan Chakra Mission, a fully indigenous defence programme designed to provide India with a next-generation aerial shield and precision strike capability by 2035.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, PM Modi said, “Mission Sudarshan Chakra will enable a powerful weapon system which will not only neutralise the enemy’s attack but also hit back many times over. The protective shield will keep expanding so that every citizen feels secure, and whatever technology is used against India, our technology will prove superior.”

The mission will be developed entirely in India, covering research, design, development, and manufacturing. It will incorporate mechanisms to anticipate future conflict scenarios and deploy targeted missile action with pinpoint accuracy, similar to the legendary Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Krishna, the Prime Minister said.

Defence experts likened the project to India’s version of Israel’s Iron Dome, describing it as a fusion of the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) with a proposed Integrated Rocket Force. Together, these systems will form a seamless defensive and offensive network—capable of detecting aerial threats in real time and delivering precision counterstrikes.

The IACCS, developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), is India’s most advanced automated air defence network, linking radars, sensors, fighter jets, and missile systems like Akash, Barak-8, MR-SAM, and S-400 through the high-speed AFNET grid. Enhanced by artificial intelligence, the system enables the military to track drones, aircraft, or missiles and assign the most effective countermeasures instantly.

The Integrated Rocket Force, which is expected to complement the IACCS, will strengthen India’s strike capability with long-range precision missiles, potentially including hypersonic systems.

PM Modi said the Sudarshan Chakra Mission, part of the Rashtra Suraksha Kavach initiative, will protect not only critical defence sites but also civilian infrastructure, hospitals, religious places, and sensitive locations.

The announcement comes months after Pakistan’s attempted strikes on Indian civilian infrastructure during a three-day conflict in May. It also follows Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent declaration of creating a Chinese-style rocket force.

Recalling Operation Sindoor, where India’s advanced defence systems outperformed the adversary in aerial combat, PM Modi said the new mission would build on those successes. “In the next ten years, by 2035, I want to expand, strengthen, and modernise this national security shield. Drawing inspiration from Lord Shri Krishna, we have chosen the path of the Sudarshan Chakra,” he declared.

Defence analyst Sandeep Unnithan noted that the Sudarshan Chakra Mission could combine real-time monitoring with precision strike capability, giving India an edge in both defence and offence.

By 2035, the government envisions a comprehensive protective dome over India, ensuring that the nation remains safe from any aerial or missile threat, while retaining the power to respond decisively.
