The 47th WorldSkills Competition was officially inaugurated on September 10, 2024, by French President Emmanuel Macron at a grand ceremony held at the LDLC Arena in Lyon, France. Jayant Chaudhary, the Minister of State (I/C) for the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, attended the event to encourage Team India and inspire the young participants.
With over 13,000 attendees from around the world, Team India left a lasting impression at WorldSkills 2024, showcasing the country's cultural heritage through their unique ceremonial attire, which reflected exquisite craftsmanship and elegance. The Indian competitors are participating in a variety of skills, including 3D Digital Game Art, Additive Manufacturing, Autobody Repair, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, Fashion Technology, Graphic Design, Health and Social Care, Mechanical Engineering CAD, Robot Systems, Welding, Patisserie, and many more.
WorldSkills is not only a competitive platform but also an opportunity to share knowledge, learn from one another, and foster unity. The year 2024 is significant for France, hosting the Olympics, Paralympics, and now the WorldSkills competition, all made possible by the nation's commitment to skill development.
During the event, Jayant Chaudhary addressed Team India, saying, "Our 60 young champions, competing in 52 skills, are not just participants but pioneers, shaping a future driven by skill, innovation, and determination. Watching them march with pride on this global stage was a powerful reminder of how important these moments are for the youth representing India."
Led by flagbearer Shreyansh Sharma from Jaipur, Rajasthan, who is competing in Chemical Laboratory Technology, the Indian contingent made a grand entrance during the Parade of Nations. The competitors drew inspiration from their meeting with the Minister, further strengthening their resolve to excel and win medals for India.
Shweta Ratanpura, a Bronze Medalist in Graphic Design Technology at WorldSkills Kazan 2019, was also recognized as the WorldSkills Champions Trust Representative for Asia in 2024. She had a personal meeting with the Minister and proudly addressed the global audience, embodying India's pride and passion.
The Indian team's participation aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of positioning India as a global hub for skilled talent. The presence of the Honourable Minister highlights the government's dedication to promoting skill development and supporting the nation's young workforce.
Notably, this year, Indian women are competing in traditionally male-dominated fields such as Welding, Plumbing, Heating, and Logistics, showcasing the evolving workforce of India and the potential for gender balance as the country invests in the skills of its youth.
The WorldSkills 2024 competition, often called the "Olympics of Skills," will run from September 10 to 15 at Euroexpo Lyon, France, featuring over 1,400 competitors from more than 70 countries, 1,300 experts, and an expected attendance of over 250,000 people.
