India has done away with the upper age limit to appear for the NEET-Undergraduate exam, said the country’s top medical education regulator on Wednesday.
Previously, the upper age restriction to sit for the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test- UG (NEET-UG) MBBS entrance test was 25 years for general category students and 30 years for reserved category students.
National Medical Commission (NMC) secretary Pulkesh Kumar revealed the regulator's decision to lift the maximum age limit in a formal letter to NTA senior director Dr Devvrat on Wednesday.
The NEET-UG is an all-India examination administered by the NTA.
“I would like to inform that it has been decided in the 4th NMC meeting held on 21st October, 2021, that there should not be any fixed upper age limit for appearing in the NEET-UG examination. Therefore, the information bulletin may be modified accordingly,” read the letter.
The NMC secretary's letter said, "Further, the process for official notification to adequately change the regulations on graduate medical education, 1997, to this effect has been commenced."
The NEET-UG examination is taken by 1.2-1.5 million medical students each year, with 600,000-800,000 passing the exam. On the basis of a draught information bulletin on NEET for admission to undergraduate degrees for the 2022 batch, the decision to eliminate the upper age limit was made.
Medical students applauded the decision.
The age threshold had been questioned numerous times in the country's Supreme Court and high courts.
According to an official, candidates can now sit for the medical entrance exam as many times as they like, even after being admitted to other institutions.NEET UG Upper Limit Removed; Medical Students Welcome the Move
