Our champion glistens no less than the gold she has won. The 15 year old prodigy girl from Odisha has broken the world record at IWF Youth World Weightlifting Championship, 2024 in the women’s 40 kg clean and jerk category. Preetismita Bhoi, an Indian weightlifter racked up a total of 133 kg with 57 kg snatch and 76 kg clean and jerk, outmatching the previous record by 1 kg. Bhoi, along with another Indian lifter, Bedabrat Bharali was proclaimed as the best lifter at the championship held at Lima, Peru. They broke the duck by winning an award for the first time in this tournament.
In August 2023, Talent identification and development committee of the Khelo India initiative designated Preetismita as a Khelo India athlete in order to subsequently receive support in training for competitions and tournaments. The genius owes her success to her coaches, family and India weight lifting federation (IWLF) who in turn credit her unswerving commitment and hours of dedicated training for the same.
An inspiration and role model for aspiring weightlifters, Bhoi wishes everyone to pursue their dreams with determination and hard work. It was a triumphant 1-2 finish for India as the silver medal was also claimed by the Indian lifter Jyoshna Sabar for lifting 125kg (56 kg+69kg) which totaled up to 18 medals with six gold, four silver and eight bronze.
An incredible achievement and a proud moment for all of us. Congratulations 👏 🎉 Preetismita Bhoi.
