Navi Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in celebrating a watershed moment in Indian sports as Harmanpreet Kaur’s team clinched India’s first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister hailed the team’s spirit and perseverance, writing:
“A spectacular win by the Indian team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 final. Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports.”
It was indeed a night of glory for Indian cricket, as the women’s team — after heartbreaks in the 2005 and 2017 finals — finally turned dreams into history before a passionate home crowd.
India’s Batting Brilliance Sets the Tone
Opting to bat first, India posted a formidable 298 for 7 in 50 overs, the second-highest total in a Women’s World Cup final. The foundation was laid by Shafali Verma (87) and Smriti Mandhana (45), whose century opening stand set the tone.Middle-order stability came through Deepti Sharma (58), while Richa Ghosh (34) provided late fireworks. South Africa’s Ayabonga Khaka impressed with 3 for 58, while Mlaba, de Klerk, and Tryon chipped in with a wicket apiece.
Proteas’ Resistance Falters Against Indian Attack
Chasing 299, South Africa began positively with Tazmin Brits (23) and Laura Wolvaardt (101) adding 51 runs for the first wicket. However, a brilliant direct hit from Amanjot Kaur sent Brits packing, sparking India’s comeback.Debutant Sree Charani struck in her first over, dismissing Bosch LBW, before captain Harmanpreet’s inspired bowling change turned the tide. Introducing Shafali Verma into the attack proved decisive — she removed Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp in quick succession.
When Wolvaardt fell to Deepti Sharma, South Africa’s hopes faded. Deepti’s five-wicket haul (5/39) and Shafali’s twin strikes (2/36) sealed India’s triumph as the Proteas were bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs.
Brief Scores:
India: 298/7 in 50 overs (Shafali Verma 87, Deepti Sharma 58, Richa Ghosh 34; Ayabonga Khaka 3-58)South Africa: 246 all out in 45.3 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 101, Annerie Dercksen 35; Deepti Sharma 5-39, Shafali Verma 2-36)Result: India won by 52 runs
This historic victory elevates India into the elite league of Women’s World Cup champions — alongside Australia, England, and New Zealand — and marks a defining chapter in the nation’s cricketing journey. As fireworks lit up the Mumbai sky, the Indian team’s joy mirrored the sentiment of a billion fans — a dream realized, and a new era begun for women’s cricket in India.
