Sikkim government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sri Aurobindo Society to launch the Auro Scholarship program for state school students.
The Auro Scholarship program provides monthly micro-scholarships to K-12 students who achieve a benchmark score in a 10-minute curriculum-aligned quiz. The parents receive up to Rs 1,000 per month in their bank account (Rs 50 per quiz, for 20 quizzes across 5 subjects), which they can use to pay for their child's education in a variety of ways.
Children who do not receive scholarships on their first attempt can study and retake the quizzes within the same month. The children's achievement motivation thus creates mass incentives to learn as well as parental engagement to focus on children's learning.
Sikkim is the first state in India to promote learning outcomes in school students through monthly micro scholarships; thousands of students will benefit directly.
The state government has made an initial commitment of Rs50 lakh, which will be distributed directly to Sikkim school students.
GP Upadhayay, additional chief secretary Sikkim said, “The partnership is aimed to nourish the students with quality education and the programme will expand to other states as well. With the synergy of resources and efforts the benefits will reach to the students at the grassroots.”
The Auro Scholar was originally launched at the national level by Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on November 24, 2020.
