New One-Time Registration System Introduced
This year, UPSC implemented a One-Time Registration (OTR) system, requiring all aspirants to register before applying for the exam. The OTR profile only needs to be created once and will remain valid for all future UPSC examinations. Those already registered could directly apply for the 2025 Prelims through this portal.
Understanding the UPSC CSE Prelims Exam Pattern
The UPSC Civil Services Examination consists of two main stages: the Preliminary and the Mains. The Prelims serves as a screening test and includes two objective-type papers:
General Studies Paper I
CSAT (Paper II)
Each paper carries multiple-choice questions, with the combined total being 400 marks. Importantly, there is a penalty for incorrect answers — one-third of the marks assigned to a question are deducted for each wrong response. No marks are deducted for questions left unanswered.
Passing Criteria for UPSC Prelims 2025
To qualify for the Mains stage, candidates must:
Secure at least 33% marks in CSAT (Paper II)
Meet the cutoff score in General Studies Paper I, as determined by the Commission
Only those who satisfy both criteria will move forward in the selection process.
Next Steps After the Prelims Result
Candidates who clear the Prelims will be required to fill out the Detailed Application Form-I (DAF-I) for the Mains examination. UPSC will issue a detailed notification shortly after the result declaration, outlining submission deadlines and further instructions for the next stage of the exam process.
