Why Do We Celebrate Onam? The Amazing Story of King Mahabali for Kids

Imagine waking up to colourful flowers, delicious food, exciting games, and fun celebrations all around you! Sounds like a perfect festival, doesn't it? Well, this is exactly the joy and excitement that Onam brings to the people of Kerala. But do you know that behind this beautiful festival is the story of a kind and generous king?

Onam is a famous harvest festival celebrated mainly in Kerala, India. According to a popular legend, there was once a kind and generous king named Mahabali. He loved his people and treated everyone equally. During his rule, the kingdom was peaceful, happy and prosperous.

However, the gods became worried about King Mahabali's growing popularity. Lord Vishnu then appeared before the king in the form of a small boy called Vamana. Vamana asked King Mahabali for just three steps of land.

The king happily agreed. Suddenly, Vamana grew into a giant form. With his first step, he covered the Earth. With his second step, he covered the sky. There was no place left for his third step. King Mahabali respectfully offered his own head for the third step.

Lord Vishnu was pleased by Mahabali's kindness and devotion. He allowed the king to visit his beloved people once every year.

This annual visit of King Mahabali is celebrated as Onam. People decorate their homes with beautiful flower designs called Pookalam, wear new clothes, enjoy delicious traditional food, and take part in dances, games and boat races.

Onam teaches us the values of kindness, generosity, equality and happiness.
