When design and defence merge for a novel cause, the outcome is always outstanding. According to a statement released by the defence ministry on Wednesday, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi have developed lightweight bulletproof jackets known as 'ABHED' (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat). These jackets offer 360-degree protection against the highest threat levels.
The jackets, which weigh only 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg for various BIS levels, have front and back armour that satisfies strict standards. They were designed by the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) at IIT Delhi. These modular jackets, which are made of locally produced boron carbide ceramic materials and cutting-edge polymers, have undergone extensive R&D to guarantee their efficacy.
The ministry stated that a number of Indian businesses have been selected to get technology transfer and assistance in producing these jackets. The success of the DIA-CoE was commended by Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO. He highlighted the cooperative efforts of DRDO, academia, and business in furthering defence research.
In an effort to incorporate business and academia into defence research and development projects, the Joint Advanced Technology Centre at IIT Delhi was developed into the DIA-CoE in 2022. The centre is still working with business partners and DRDO experts on a number of cutting edge technology initiatives.
