Teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi lit up the IPL 2026 Eliminator with a breathtaking assault against Sunrisers Hyderabad, rewriting the record books and surpassing the legendary Chris Gayle for the most sixes in a single IPL season.
The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener hammered seven sixes during his explosive knock, taking his season tally beyond Gayle’s iconic 59 sixes from IPL 2012. In the process, the Lucknow crowd christened him “Universe Baby Boss” — a playful nod to Gayle’s famous “Universe Boss” nickname.
Sooryavanshi’s innings was pure carnage. The youngster raced to a stunning half-century in just 16 balls, equalling the fastest fifty ever recorded in IPL playoffs history. He eventually fell agonisingly short of a century, smashing 97 off only 29 deliveries, studded with 12 sixes and five boundaries.
The knock also brought a flurry of records:
Joint-fastest fifty in IPL playoff history — 16 balls
Most sixes in a Powerplay innings in IPL history — 8
Fifth fifty in under 20 balls in IPL career
Fifth 50+ score inside the Powerplay this season
Sooryavanshi also came within touching distance of Gayle’s fastest IPL century record of 30 balls.
With nearly 600 runs this season, calls for the prodigy’s inclusion in India’s senior team are growing louder. The youngster is expected to feature for India A in the upcoming Sri Lanka tri-series led by Tilak Varma.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal described Sooryavanshi as a “special talent” and stressed the importance of guiding the teenager carefully to help him thrive at the highest level for years to come.
