Meet Virendra Sehwah's Son Aaryavir Sehwag: Makes India U19 Debut

A new chapter in the Sehwag cricket story has begun.

Aaryavir Sehwag, son of legendary India opener Virender Sehwag, recently made his India U19 debut during the three-match one-day series against Australia U19. The young batter made a promising impression, scoring 109 runs across the three matches as India completed a 3-0 series sweep.

Interestingly, Aaryavir's approach at the top of the order showed glimpses of the attacking style that made his father one of India's most feared opening batters. In each of the three matches, he gave India brisk starts, displaying the intent to score freely rather than settling into a cautious approach.

But behind the young cricketer's early international experience is a father who understands better than most the pressures that come with the game—and the expectations attached to the Sehwag name.

Speaking to NDTV, Virender Sehwag revealed the advice he has given his son as he begins his own cricket journey.

“I am very proud of Aaryavir Sehwag. I gave him advice that pressure is there but go out there and play freely. Express yourself, don't worry that you have to score big runs,” Sehwag said.

His message to Aaryavir is simple: focus on the game rather than the numbers.

“If you express yourself, the big runs will automatically come. But if you think about big runs, then I don't think the big runs will come,” the former India opener added.

Learning to handle the noise

For a young cricketer carrying the surname Sehwag, expectations are likely to follow wherever he plays. Virender Sehwag, however, believes his son must learn to separate his own performance from the opinions surrounding him.

“I was telling him that people will love you, people will criticise you, people will hate you, but you should not react to what people are saying,” he said.

Instead, Sehwag wants his son to develop an internal measure of success.

“If you are scoring runs, you know that you did well. If you're not scoring runs, you know you didn't do well. So you should focus on your process and your skills and on your practice rather than worrying about what people are saying.”

That, Sehwag believes, is an important lesson for any young sportsperson navigating the early stages of a professional career.

‘He is just learning’

Sehwag also revealed that Aaryavir has largely followed his advice during his early cricketing journey.

“He played U19 for Delhi; he scored runs, he didn't score runs, but he didn't react. So that's the best thing,” Sehwag said.

The former India opener also acknowledged that Aaryavir is still young and learning to deal with the highs and lows of competitive cricket.

“Sometimes he will get upset, but he is a kid, you know. He is an 18-year-old boy and he is just learning,” Sehwag said.

For Aaryavir, the road ahead will inevitably come with comparisons to his father. Virender Sehwag built a celebrated international career on fearless batting, memorable innings and an attacking approach that redefined opening in Test cricket.

Aaryavir, however, is only at the beginning of his own journey.

His India U19 debut and 109 runs in the Australia series provide an early glimpse of his potential. For now, his father's message remains clear: play freely, trust the process, keep improving and don't let outside noise dictate the game.
