IIT Delhi has launched a number of new programs in response to the Indian government's National Education Policy (NEP), which was released in July 2020. In recent years, the Institute has established an interdisciplinary School of Public Policy, School of Artificial Intelligence, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Department of Design. According to the official statement, every Ph.D. student admitted to this academic unit is overseen by two or more supervisors from different academic areas.
IIT Delhi stated in a statement that the institute already offers a number of multidisciplinary undergraduate programs and that several more are in the works. In the academic year 2020-21, two new interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary BTech programs, BTech in Engineering and Computational Mechanics and BTech in Materials Engineering, were launched.
More multidisciplinary programs are being launched, such as the BTech degree in Energy Engineering, which will begin in the academic year 2021-22, and the Bachelor of Design, which will begin in the academic year 2022-23. According to IIT Delhi, a BTech program in Design will begin in 2025-2026.
Professor V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi, said of the new courses and their implementation structure, "As an Institute of Eminence, IIT Delhi is fully mindful of its role in the timely and proper execution of educational programs." The Institute is analyzing the structure and character of its current programs to see if they may serve as a solid foundation for launching the NEP.
