For the IIT-JEE entrance exam, the government has planned to raise the number of outside countries from 12 to 25. The United States of America, Australia, South Africa, Singapore, China, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam are among the most recent countries to be added to the list.
This has given NRIs and international students from these countries the option to take the IIT-JEE exam, which if passed will allow them to enrol in India's top technical institutes through the Direct Admission of Student Abroad (DASA) scheme.
While IITs are not covered by DASA, the government is working to establish IIT campuses in other countries.
The move will also affect the National Institutes of Technology, the National Institutes of Information Technology, the School of Planning and Architecture, and other federally supported technical institutes.
Because abroad students will register for the exam, academicians believe it will enhance competition for Indian pupils.
"There would be more rivalry from their NRI counterparts and other overseas students," says RP Tiwari, vice-chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, in an interview with Education Times. This will also allow our kids to interact with students from various cultures and value systems who are located in different time zones. There is a pressing need to offer Indian HEIs with worldwide exposure that will enable them to thrive and compete in a global learning environment”.
"This might be described as a component of 'India's globalisation," says BJ Rao, vice-chancellor of the University of Hyderabad (UoH). The Education Ministry's move is also in line with the continuing practise of establishing Indian higher education campuses abroad. Many foreign countries have expressed strong interest in hosting Indian HEIs on their soil, owing to our country's strong educational capacity in terms of teaching, content, and scholarships."
